Iran

If you haven't been following the Iranian (quite possibly stolen) election you should (I recommend Andrew Sullivan, Talking Points Memo, and Juan Cole). It's fascinating.

If nothing else, this is one of the most amazing photos I've seen taken in the last few years:(hat tip Sullivan)

I haven't been following the Iranian election stuff that closely because it started when I was in NYC and I'm trying to cut back on my blog reading, but have either Sullivan or Cole (I've read the TMP coverage, and they haven't to my knowledge) pointed out that calling it an "election" is a bit of a misnomer, since the candidates have to be approved of by the religious leadership, etc? I don't like his writing, but Christopher Hitchens talks about a little of this on Slate: http://www.slate.com/id/2220520/

Still, the whole business is interesting as it is showing that there are large segments of the Iranian population who seem like they WOULD like a more democratic government.

Sullivan mentions it from time to time, or at least links to people who do. I haven't read all that much of Cole's blog but he hasn't mentioned it in what I've read. Really, I guess you would call it a quasi-election, where you are allowed to vote and your vote (in previous quasi-elections, if not this one) is actually counted, but you have no say in who is running.
